Walker Sands: Working Hard on DE&I Initiatives

By Olivia Sowacke

In today's world, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) practices are essential to creating a safe and welcoming workplace for all. Marketing agency Walker Sands, with five offices throughout the U.S., including Chicago, has demonstrated a commitment to going above and beyond in its inclusion efforts. The agency's active DE&I groups include a People of Color (POC) resource group, Walker Women and a working parents group.

In addition to the DEI&A Panel scheduled for Thursday, March 02, attendees of PR eLevated also have the opportunity to visit Walker Sands to learn more about its B2B marketing model and commitment to the future of the field. Read more about the agency’s commitment to change below.

POC Resource Group

Walker Sands’ POC resource group helps people of color connect within the workplace. Creating diversity in the workplace and making all groups feel empowered, supported and connected can ultimately lead to happier employees and clients. This resource group is just one way that Walker Sands demonstrates its commitment to fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging.

Walker Women

In addition to the POC resource group, Walker Sands has also established a resource group for women, called Walker Women. This group provides opportunities to learn about the inclusion of women in the workplace and women in leadership roles. The agency has even invited people like award-winning entrepreneur Sage Ke‘alohilani Quiamno to discuss topics such as dismantling systemic barriers in the workplace, as well as data from the annual McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.Org Women in the Workplace report.

Walker's Working Parents

According to John Everette, Senior Account Manager at Walker Sands, “The family leave policy at Walker Sands is a great benefit for new parents. Especially as a new father, I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of time I was granted, and there was nothing but total support to take it – no strings attached. It was a true blessing to be able to spend quality time with my newborn son and then come back to work like nothing had changed.”

While we as current students might not think of maternity and paternity leave as important benefits, these perks and recognitions of work-life balance are important indicators of an organization’s broader recognition of its employees’ well-being.
